In a swift move Himachal Suspends Cough Syrup Production Amid Safety Concerns for Children

In a swift response to alarming reports from Madhya Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh Drug Department has temporarily halted the production of Nexa DS cough syrup, manufactured by Aquanova Pharma. The move comes after concerns were raised about a possible link between certain syrups and the tragic deaths of children.

Madhya Pradesh officials reached out to Himachal authorities, urging an investigation into two specific syrups—Coldrif and Nexa DS. While Coldrif isn’t made in Himachal, Nexa DS is, prompting immediate action from the state’s Drug Department. Production has been suspended as a precaution while lab tests are underway.

Manish Kapoor, Himachal’s Drug Controller, confirmed that an inquiry was launched as soon as the alert was received. “We’ve identified the companies involved and, in coordination with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), initiated risk-based inspections,” he said.

Initial findings from Madhya Pradesh revealed the presence of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol—dangerous chemicals typically found in antifreeze—in the syrup given to children. These substances, even in small amounts, can cause serious kidney and brain damage. Their sweet taste makes them especially hazardous for children, who may ingest them unknowingly.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Madhya Pradesh has also contacted Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh—where the syrups are produced—urging them to stop manufacturing until the investigation is complete. Thirteen samples have been sent for testing to pinpoint the source of contamination.

While it’s still unclear which product may have caused the fatalities, the multi-state investigation is ongoing, with authorities focused on ensuring safety, accountability, and preventing further harm.
