Riders on a Mission: Preserving Himalayan Heritage on Two Wheels
This isn’t your everyday road trip. Twenty passionate motorcyclists have kick-started a journey from Theog, Himachal Pradesh, with a mission that goes far beyond chasing scenic landscapes. They are rider-researchers—the driving force behind the fourth edition of The Great Himalayan Exploration, an initiative by UNESCO and Royal Enfield.
Riding for Culture, Not Just Adventure
These bikers aren’t just exploring valleys—they’re turning into cultural archivists. Their goal is to document 12 rare traditions that form the living heartbeat of the Himalayas. Instead of thrill-seeking, they are immersing themselves in communities, ensuring that fragile legacies are not lost to time.
Split into four groups, the riders will live with locals and learn age-old practices, including:
- Himachali Dham – a traditional community feast filled with rich flavors.
- Kath-Kuni architecture – a centuries-old earthquake-resistant building style.
- Kangra miniature paintings – delicate artworks celebrated worldwide.
- Kullu Dussehra – a vibrant cultural festival drawing visitors from across the globe.
A Legacy in Motion
Launched in 2022, this project has already safeguarded more than 70 cultural practices across Ladakh and the Eastern Himalayas. This year, their journey will be showcased in a breathtaking four-part National Geographic docuseries on JioHotstar, offering viewers a chance to witness the Himalayas beyond their landscapes.
