Shimla Nagarik Sabha Demands Immediate Action Over Contaminated Water Crisis in Malyana and Surrounding Wards

The Shimla Nagarik Sabha (SNS), Malyana Unit, has voiced strong concerns regarding the persistent distribution of unsafe drinking water in the Malyana, Balai, Shanan, Bakhrai, Dhobighat, and Sangti Wards. According to the Sabha, approximately 500 households in these areas are regularly receiving water contaminated with sewage, posing a significant risk to public health.

The SNS criticized the Municipal Corporation (MC) for its contradictory stance—promoting cleanliness initiatives while neglecting the crucial responsibility of providing clean water. Despite repeated complaints from residents, the issue remains unresolved, leading to growing frustration. The Sabha highlighted the injustice, pointing out that citizens diligently pay their garbage, property tax, and water bills, yet are being deprived of their fundamental right to safe drinking water.

The Sabha emphasized that this issue extends beyond the Malyana and Sangti Wards, affecting other areas recently brought under the MC’s jurisdiction. They also recalled a similar incident from a few years ago when contaminated water triggered a jaundice outbreak, resulting in a suspension of water supplies. The Sabha warned that the current negligence could lead to another public health crisis.

Vivek Kashyap, Convener of the SNS Malyana Unit, has issued a stern warning that if the problem is not resolved promptly, the Sabha will organize a public protest. They have demanded immediate action, including the cleaning of water tanks within two days. If their demands are not met, the Sabha plans to hold the MC and Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) accountable through further demonstrations. The Sabha has also requested an urgent meeting with MC officials to address these pressing concerns.
