Protest erupts against proposed ‘Tourism Village’ on Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University land

Students and teachers at Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University (HPAU) recently staged a protest against the state government’s decision to allocate 112 hectares of university land for the establishment of a ‘tourism village’ on campus. The demonstrators marched through the university, demanding an immediate reversal of the government’s choice.

HPAU Teachers Association has expressed concern about the impact of the proposed ‘tourism village’ on the educational institution. The association has emphasized that while they supported such development in the Palampur region, it should not occur within a premier educational institute. The association has consistently opposed this decision, urging the university’s Chancellor and Governor to prevent the allocation of vital agricultural land for tourism purposes.

Both faculty and students have been vocal in their opposition to the land allotment from the outset. The government’s decision has raised concerns about the university’s academic environment.
